How it All Started (or, I'll Just “Google” It)
  • Access to government published information is widely expected to be electronic
  • …and it’s expected to be available almost immediately
3
Here Today, Gone Tomorrow
4
The Challenges…
  • Digital information needs to be authentic
  • Digital information needs to be verifiable in terms of versions
  • Digital information needs to stay available in perpetuity

5
…and GPO’s Solution
  • GPO’s Future Digital System (FDsys) will be a world class system for managing official Government content.

  • The system will verify and track versions, assure authenticity, preserve content, and provide permanent public access.

  • The system will be:
    • Rules based
    • Policy neutral
    • Modular and adaptable
6
FDsys Will:
  • Automate the collection and warehousing of electronic information from all three branches of government
  • Act as a secure, trusted, auditable digital environment
  • Provide for Web searching, viewing, downloading and printing
  • Provide document masters for conventional and on-demand printing
7
An OAIS Based Approach
8
There’s a Package for You at the Front Desk
  • OAIS is a package-based model
    • Content Packages contain both digital objects and metadata records about the object and its format, related by a binding XML file.
    • Content Package approach supports digital preservation and interoperability
