SVG 2009-03-15 Data Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG) is a language for describing two-dimensional graphics and graphical applications in XML. SVG is an ideal format for use on government Web sites and as a graphical data storage format. Its benefits include: * stable, open-standard format (not controlled by any one company, royalty-free licensing terms) * broad applicability for data charts, graphs, diagrams, floorplans, maps, illustrations, schematics, and many other uses * XML-based, text-based graphics, machine- and human-readable * cross-platform * Web- and desktop-ready * natively supported in most browsers (Mozilla Firefox, Opera, Apple Safari, Google Chrome), free plugins available for Internet Explorer * native support on many mobile devices, mandated by 3GPP, OMA, and other mobile standards * content can be static, animated, or scripted, with appropriate security contexts for each type * dynamic interactivity * visual elements represented by discrete objects, allowing easy recombination and editing * zoom, pan, and drill-down capabilities * printable at any resolution * accessible (Section 508 compatible), with keyboard navigation support and full text search * usable for mapping applications, including import/export from leading GIS software packages * can be intermixed with or referenced from X/HTML * WebCGM compatible and convertible (important for many federal contractor bids) * allows for direct embedding of non-graphical metadata * many professional authoring tools, including both commercial and open-source Data Management Service Interface and Integration Interoperability Data Format / Classification eXtensible Markup Language (XML) W3C Doug Schepers featrm@schepers.cc
